Thank you Venice Arts Council for your Co-sponsorship - opening of "From My Altitude" touring exhibit by Antonio Guerrero of the Cuban Five

In addition, SPARC is included in the Venice Family Clinics annual

        Amnesty International
        Ombdusman

Dear Ms Clinton and Ms Napolitano:
We respectfully write to you to ask the State Department of the United
States and the Department of Homeland Security to immediately grant
HUMANITARIAN VISAS to two Cuban citizens, Adriana Pérez and Olga
Salanueva, wives of prisoners Gerardo Hernández and René González
respectively. They have been denied visits to their husbands in prison
for 11 years.
On December 18, 2009 the Department of Homeland Security denied a
humanitarian visa to Olga Salanueva.  Without any explanation, they
denied this elementary recourse to come to the US with the sole
purpose to see her husband, René González, unjustly sentenced to 15
years in prison.
At the time of her husband's arrest, Olga Salanueva was living with
him and their two daughters; the youngest daughter is US born as well
as Rene Gonzalez himself. After the arrest of her husband Ms Salanueva
was detained with the purpose of pressuring her husband to collaborate
with the prosecutors assuming a crime that he never committed.  Three
months later in December 2000, Olga was deported to Cuba. After 10
years since the deportation, the US government continues to punish
this woman. There has not been any accusation or legal process against
her. Additionally her status of being a mother and a wife of US
citizens makes a compelling connection to the United States.
In the case of Adriana Perez; in July 2002, she traveled to the United
States to visit her husband Gerardo Hernández, unjustly serving two
life sentences plus 15 years in US prison. But upon her arrival, she
was detained in the Houston Airport, photographed, finger printed,
interrogated for 11 hours, prevented from speaking to a lawyer or
Cuban diplomats and subsequently sent back to Cuba, cruelly preventing
Adriana to see her husband.  That was the last time that she was
granted a visa to see him during the 11 years he has been imprisoned.
The last visa denial for Adriana was on July 15, 2009, the day of
their 21st wedding anniversary. Four months later, on November 2,
Gerardo Hernandez's mother died.  Not even on a sad event like this in
the life of any human being was Adriana Perez allowed to visit her
husband to console him.
The applications for humanitarian visas for Olga Salanueva and Adriana
Pérez are supported by an important number of religious, legal and
human rights institutions. From the World Council of Churches to the
US Council of Christian Churches, the Cuban Council of Churches, the
Association of American Jurists, Amnesty International, 170
personalities including several Nobel Prize winners, parliamentarians,
elected officials, and intellectuals from all over the world.
Until the Cuban Five are freed, the below signatories demand the
immediate granting of  HUMANITARIAN VISAS to ADRIANA PÉREZ and OlGA
SALANUEVA and MULTIPLE VISAS TO ALL THE FAMILY OF THE CUBAN FIVE.
This gesture will show the world that we are represented by elected
officials who want better relations with other nations and who have
compassion and humanitarian hearts.

EYE AM NOT A ROBOT - Mark X Farina & Gerry Fialka's 14 minute film
probes the percept of technology "being alive" by evoking early
Russian film and Constructivism. Cultural icons from James Joyce to
Robby the Robot to Marilyn Monroe are your humanoid guides through new
art technologies. Can machines surpass humans in the creative process?
How are robotics restructuring patterns of social interdependence in
Art, Science and Nature? Cine-poets Farina & Fialka reframe our
collective compliance in anthropomorphizing media as art forms. In the
spirit of McLuhan's mosaic writing, this collage film propagates
mythic thinking, in the Jungian sense, where people mime cues from
technology used by millions. By flipping the art museum video
installation experience into media yoga, one can download morphic
resonance into the nervous system as a Zen experiment. What is the
future of art and artificial intelligence? See the likeness &
difference in Anticipatory Mindfulness and Android Meme. Summon the
impossible by retooling what Derrida calls "the absence of presence."
"The future of the future is the present." - McLuhan. "I wouldn't be
seen dead with a living work of art." - Museum curator. Having
screened parts one and two of Farina & Fialka's TOTO MEME series in
2008 & 2009, FIA completes the trilogy with EYE AM NOT A ROBOT for the
entire month of march, ate hours per day- The Flint Institute of Arts.

Pico (1 door w. of Bundy), level P2 * Park free in lot!   Laughing Matters: An Evening of Serious Comedy (some of it with a melody & strings attached!)   with  sublimely neurotic (& oddly lovable!) late-nite favorite Marc Maron and soulful, comic chanteuse Teresa Tudury   Marc has appeared in countless clubs, performing arts centers, films, and off-Broadway. He hosted an Air America Radio show for four years featuring interviews with personalities cultural and political -- and currently hosts the popular podcast WTF? http://www.wtfpod.com  Engaging his audience as a storyteller, Marc is known for his incisive cultural and political commentary, mystical ruminations, and neurotic insights into human nature. Born in New Jersey and raised in Albuquerque, NM, Marc started his comedy career in the late 80s in Hollywood, as a doorman at the famed Comedy Store. Marc has appeared on just about every TV show that will allow comics, from The Late Show with David Letterman to Late Night with Conan O'Brien, where he is a special favorite.      TERESA TUDURY started writing songs at age 12 and was performing in San Francisco nightclubs by the time she was 15. She has played on and off in the Bay Area for years, and for almost two decades was based in Los Angeles where in addition to music gigs, she wrote comedy and worked as a character actress on stage and screen.  With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Teresa's voice has been described as a cross between Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt (LA Weekly). Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.  Teresa has recorded or performed with such greats as Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Leo Kottke and Bonnie Bramlett. Now residing in Sonoma County, she continues to perform and write new material.  REVIEWS...  "It's not clear yet whether singer/comedienne Teresa Tudury is another Tracey Ullman, a new Sophie Tucker or a revitalized Bea Lillie. Her utterly madcap performance...managed to include reference to all of the above-and then some. Tudury is taking risks all over the place, with none of the stiff and predictable inhibitions of a too-established performer...What we're talking about here, folks, is a star in the making."  -Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times  "Undiscovered gems are a rarity in a city where folks are always on the lookout for the next big thing, but...there's a performer who is perched on the cusp of better things. Her name is Teresa Tudury, and she...is making her reputation the old-fashioned way: She's earning it." -John Carmen, Daily Variety  Hear her hilarious Last Heterosexual Female at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf39dQAsfno  & Please Put Mrs. God on the Phone at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZpeKoacrzc&NR=1 More at www.teresatudury.net  Parlor Performances in association with Temple Akiba presents New Zealand's Funniest Jewish Export! Urgent! Inside Out Needs Your Support!

Please take five minutes to help us fight potential budget cuts that will seriously undercut our service to youth throughout Los Angeles.

On Friday, January 29th, the City of Los Angeles' Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) released a mid-year financial report.  The 157 page document calls for immediate cost-saving measures including instructing the Department of Cultural Affairs to notify Contractors that 2009-10 grant funding is no longer available and to work with the City Attorney's Office to begin termination of existing contracts where services have not yet been provided.

That means all grants from the Department of Cultural Affairs for this year will no longer be available, even if already committed.  This is a sizable amount of funding for Inside Out. This motion will go before Council for a vote tomorrow - Wednesday, February 3rd.

We all understand that the City of Los Angeles, like the rest of the country is in the midst of an economic recession.  However, grants made by the Department of Cultural Affairs stimulate jobs, our local economy and yield a minimum of a $8.00 return on investment.

Stakeholders are encouraged to write a letter to your council member.

Take two minutes and send your city council member an email. Remind your Council Member that the arts:

*Make money * Attract tourists * Attract businesses *
Arts, like parks, are for everyone

This motion will go before Council for a vote this Wednesday, February 3rd. Show the City Council the power of the arts community. Attend the Council meeting and provide public comment. We need to remind the Council of just how important the arts are to Los Angeles.

Please forward this information to your friends and networks and post it on Facebook to encourage others to take action.

Fwd: Los Angeles arts in crisis. We need action!

Wed, 02/03/2010 - 09:12

Take Action Now. Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is in Jeopardy.

TOMORROW: On Wednesday, February 3rd, L.A. City Council's Budget & Finance Committee will put forward a motion to dissolve Cultural Affairs. Click here to view the agenda packet.

We are inviting the community to an open forum discussion.

Date: Tuesday, February 2, 2010
Time: 8:00pm - 11:00pm
Location: 132 S. Beaudry Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Dear friends and supporters,

As you may already know, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is being threatened with catastrophic budget and staff cuts. Staff reductions of 24-48% have been proposed, as well as the total elimination of the $2.2 million in grants that the Department awards annually. This includes grants that have been awarded for the rest of this year, which may include funding for Venice Arts. In addition, the City of Los Angeles Budget and Finance Committee has put forward a motion that could eliminate any obligation to fund the Department of Cultural Affairs at all.

We don't have to tell you about the valuable programs and organizations that will be adversely affected by this action. The arts in Los Angeles are a 14.8 billion dollar industry. For every dollar spent by the Department of Cultural Affairs, eight dollars are generated directly in jobs for artists and businesses. This doesn't even take into account the value of the arts to society overall.

If you have any questions about the value of the Department's programs view Alex's story, as only one example of the potential impact of arts engagement in a young person's life.

Special thanks to Angel's Gate Cultural Center for their advocacy in this effort.

We need your help and we need it now!

Yours Sincerely,

Venice Arts Staff

Veteran radio host, Ira Fistell, is planning to re-launch his popular Bring 'Em Back Alive show on the Jewish Life Television Channel (JLTV). He's seeking actors and writers who would be comfortable participating in a 30-minute on air interview in the character of well-known personalities in the arts, science, literature, politics, etc. He has taped two pilots (with Albert Einstein and Dorothy Parker). There will be compensation -- most likely AFTRA scale. The show is carried by Direct TV and Time Warner in many large cities, with a potential reach of 35-40 million viewers. Personalities already lined up are Ayn Rand, George Gershwin, Queen Elizabeth I, Clarence Darrow, Christopher Columbus, Margaret Sanger, Harry Houdini, and Abraham the Patriarch. The personalities must have a Jewish connection, either positive or negative. Please e-mail Jeannine with ideas, leads and questions!

Gerry Fialka screens films as antennae of the race, broadcasting the
hidden effects of what we have invented. From experimental films to
political activist cinema to lit, art, music flix to avant garde
documentaries, this series will provoke new questions and feature
fiery discussions.
SUBVERSIVE CINEMA is inspired by two seminal books: Gene Youngblood's
EXPANDED CINEMA and Amos Vogel's FILM AS A SUBVERSIVE ART. In FILM AS
A SUBVERSIVE ART: AMOS VOGEL & CINEMA 16 (2003 documentary directed by
Paul Cronin), these thoughts were expressed by Scott MacDonald and
Amos:
"Scott MacDonald: In Amos Vogel's Cinema 16 programming strategy, he
was very conscious of Eisenstein; with the ideas of juxtaposing one
kind of thing with another to create energy in the audience and
maximum thought in viewers.
Amos Vogel: When I showed 5 or 6 films on the Cinema 16 program, they
were always selected from the point of view how they would collide
with each other in the minds of the audience. On one program there
would always be an abstract film, a scientific film, an avant-garde
film and a political documentary, because my intention at all times
was to subvert audience expectations by showing such diverse and
different films on one and the same program....
Many films shown at Cinema 16 and in my book "Film As A Subversive
Art," show reality in ways that we have not previously anticipated.
... This is how I use the word "subversive" - anything that changes or
undermines previous ways of thinking and feeling. Subversive art makes
you look at things in a new and very different way. It disrupts. It
destroys, and thereby builds up new realities and new truths."

"I have always been on the side of those who seek the truth, but I
part ways with them when they think they have found it." - Luis
Bunuel. These thoughts inspire the spirit of curating films at
SUBVERSIVE CINEMA. The public is invited to join us, free admission.

[Beachhead] Carol Berman Fondiller - RIP

Sat, 01/09/2010 - 21:51
Carol Berman died today. She was known to Beachhead readers as Carol
Fondiller. By whatever name, Carol was a true Venetian. She was a
writer par excellence, a poet, a thespian, and a political activist
whose caustic wit made more than one politician and landlord tremble.
She was found today around 4:30 pm in her small unit in the 5 Rose
Avenue apartments after friends grew worried about her not answering
her telephone. The cause of death is unknown at this time, but Carol
had been in poor health for the last several years. However, she
seemed to be recovering from a month-long bout with the flu.
Carol came to Venice in the early 1960s and hung out at the Venice
West Cafe where she met John Haag, Stuart Perkoff and the other Beat
poets and artists. As the sixties progressed and became more
political, Carol was an activist in the Free Venice movement,
including the Venice Survival Committee and the Free Venice Theater
Group, which put on plays at the Venice Pavilion. Carol was one of the
last of the leaders of the sixties movement in Venice.
She was a founder of the Free Venice Beachhead. Nearly every issue
since 1968 has borne her imprint. She served on the Beachhead
Collective more times and longer than any other person. She wrote more
articles for the Beachhead than anyone else. Carol could have had a
media career with much larger newspapers or magazines but she choose
to focus on her community, Venice. The current Beachhead reprinted an
article by Carol, entitled The CRUD Conspiracy, which was originally
published January 1970.
Carol was involved in every aspect of her adopted city. She was
arrested several times for standing up for free speech, including the
right to distribute flyers on the Ocean Front Walk. She once ran on
the Peace and Freedom Party ticket against Tom Hayden for state
assembly. A couple of years ago, Carol was crowned "Queen of Venice"
by her friends. She said she had mixed feelings about the monarchy,
but accepted the title in deference to her friends.
The issue dearest to her heart was low income housing. Carol believed
that poor people had the right to live in decent homes near the beach.
For several years, she served on a Housing and Urban Development
committee for low income housing. She was appointed by Councilmember
Ruth Galanter to a committee to review development proposals for
Venice. Carol succeeded to reducing the size and/or including low
income housing in many buildings throughout Venice. She also was
instrumental in stopping other developments that she believed were
unsuited to Venice.
At the time of her death, Carol was working on an article on
preserving low income housing at the Holiday Venice apartments in
Oakwood.
As a member of the Beachhead Collective with Carol since 2002, I was
privileged to work with Carol on many issues of the paper. As her
health grew worse, Carol was unable to attend most meetings, but we
conversed by phone on the issues of the day, and upon what the
Beachhead should focus. She was both my friend and mentor.
The next issue of the Beachhead will carry more news about Carol.
Since she was also our obit writer, we'll need your help to do justice
to her legacy. Please send us your recollections and interactions with
Carol over the years.
I know I speak for the entire Collective when I say that we will
attempt to continue publishing a Beachhead that is true to all the
good things that Carol stood for.
There are not yet any plans for public gatherings in Carol's memory.
But there will undoubtedly be a community-wide memorial for her. We'll
notify you when there are plans.

"Capitalism In Question (Because It Is)"

The Great Recession that began in 2008 has brought renewed attention to the discontents of capitalism, particularly its periodic crises and concomitant social instability. Exploring the complexities and interdependencies of art and commerce, the artists in Capitalism In Question (Because It Is) offer a range of unexpected reflections that resonate, powerfully, with our current economic moment and the larger issues it raises. This exhibition is co-sponsored by Pitzer Art Galleries and the Munroe Center for Social Inquiry at Pitzer College, and it initiates the Munro Center's multi-disciplinary program of lectures, seminars, and a curated concert, all focused on issues of capitalism and its discontents. www.pitzer.edu/csi.

Carla Herrera-Prats, Localization, Location, Ubicación

Referencing Marcel Mauss's theory of Gift Economy, New York-based artist Carla Herrera-Prats produces a gift-in the form of a book entitled Localization, Location, Ubicación-and donates it to libraries in Canada, the United States and Mexico that have contributed information and photographs to it on the subject of immigration, labor, collaboration and art. This gift functions as a bridge linking the participating institutions together and examines the way knowledge production and art are formed, disseminated and organized. Transformed into a collection center, the gallery will house the materials accumulated in the production of Localization, Location, Ubicación.
